Job Posting - Arabic Speaking Middle Eastern Cross Cultural Health Broker

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The cross-cultural health broker (CCHB) is a bilingual, bi-cultural health care worker. Under the supervision of the project coordinator, the CCHBsupports client and health service providers by providing language interpretation and facilitating cross-cultural understanding, regarding relevant cultural and health issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Providing interpretation services
  • Enhancing communication and cross-cultural understanding with health care service providers
  • Helping to navigate the health care system and health related appointments
  • Supporting client’s self-help and self-management
  • Connecting clients to other social and community services
  • Doing community outreach for health promotion programs
  • Facilitate and co-develop curriculum for community health workshops and peer groups 
  • Participate in the development of culturally appropriate health promotion materials
  • Serve as a health promotion resource to community
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:

  • Written and oral fluency in English and Arabic
  • An understanding of the Canadian health care system
  • Ability to contribute to a welcoming environment and to help people feel comfortable
  • Commitment to maintaining professional standards and confidentiality
  • Sound decision-making, teamwork and organizational abilities
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills
  • Commitment to promoting a culturally safe, anti-oppressive environment, and low–barrier learning environment 
  • Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for clients to discuss women’s and mental health issues
  • Ability to culturally adapt and deliver community-based health promotion activities
  • Active member of the Arabic speaking Middle Eastern community, with the trust of the community

PREFERRED:

  • Established network in the Syrian and Iraqi communities, for community outreach
  • Experience with seniors’ health promotion
  • Experience working in a health/medical setting
  • Lived experience with or understanding of international migration issues
  • Work experience in community-based initiatives and health promotion activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to or passion for issues of health equity and access
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a culturally diverse team

SALARY:This is a casual part-time position with a pay rate of $19/hour, plus 4% vacation.

Umbrella Mobile Clinic

  • BC licensed family physician

Are you a BC licensed family physician who is interested in making a difference in your free time while having a rewarding experience?

Come and join the Umbrella Mobile Clinic! We are currently looking for volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners, preferably who can commit to one on-site four-hour shift per month (plus travel time) to bring much needed medical services to the Mexican temporary foreign farm workers in the Fraser Valley.

The Umbrella Mobile Clinic has been very well received by its patients, and our doctors find it a rewarding environment in which to practice their profession while providing a much needed community service. Spanish is not necessary.

If you speak Spanish, have a background in and/or are interested in community development, health services, health issues, social determinants of health and farm workers's issues, we want you! 

The Umbrella mobile clinic operates with the help of general volunteers in the areas of intake, pharmacy help, patient health information, social conversations and setup/takedown. We are looking for people with Spanish fluency that can commit to at least one clinic per month. Clincs are held on Sundays in the Fraser Valley.
